I was smoking for around 10 years before I tried Champix. In total I received a 12 week course (which is recommended for long term success). I didn’t have any side effects at all from taking it other nausea on occasion, my advice to avoid this is to take the tablet with a FULL glass of water and wait at least 15 minutes before having a smoke, otherwise I got an uncontrollable urge to throw up. I also tried drinking juice or a cup of tea or coffee and it made me feel sick but for whatever reason if I drank an entire glass of water I didn’t. A possible side effect is unusal dreams, I know that I dreamt more then usual but that didn’t bother me. Another side effect is not being able to sleep properly, but I found that I’ve never slept better in my life while taking them! I think it tells you to give up sometime in the first 14 days, which I found it hard to set a day to stop (I tried day 8, but then firgured that I still had a few days to go before I HAD to stop), so on day 14 I set my alarm late so I would have to rush to get to work and because I was in such a rush I didn’t think of having a smoke, once at work I didn’t even feel like a smoke – its been 9 months since then and I’ve never had a single craving and haven’t had an urge, even under stressful situations to start smoking again. I did find that over the Christmas period, having a few days on the grog, that I did think about having a smoke – but that was only because I knew that I would normally be smoking when I drink, but I didn’t have an actual craving to smoke, so I didn’t. The best thing about taking Champix is that by the 4th or 5th day, you can’t taste the smoke, there’s no craving, so when you have a smoke there no benefit, there’s just nothing, so you don’t finish your smokes because its pointless and you also find if you don’t look at the clock (if you had a certain time at work that you’d normally stop for a smoke) you don’t think of going for a smoke. I can say that 9 months later I don’t even feel like I ever smoked, I don’t cough in the morning and generally feel better for it and seem to be able to do more before feeling puffed out. I tried patches and gums etc before which didn’t work and I’d get upset or moody over nothing whereas on these there is no change in behaviour/moods it’s simply like you’ve never smoked. Its absolutely brilliant stuff to take, best thing I ever did. I’m happy to answer any other questions you or your father might have.
Good luck.
