Knowing why e-cigarettes were introduced leads to understanding what electronic cigarettes are. For decades, smokers could light up their tobacco products anywhere they chose. The public viewed smoking as an acceptable habit in the past but the tolerance for cigarette smoking has changed in recent years.

Increasingly, tobacco users find themselves ostracized in public areas and relegated to feeding their habit outside public buildings and only in certain designated smoke filled rooms in airports. The condemnation of tobacco has spread to bars, restaurants, theaters and everywhere else people gather as the dangers of second hand smoke have become public knowledge.

The e-cig was introduced in 2003 and conceived as an alternative to tobacco. Electronic cigarettes are best described as a personal vaporizer. Nicotine and flavor is delivered as a vapor that does not release toxins that would affect those around you. E-cigs may look like a cigarette in shape or may resemble another tobacco product such as a cigar or pipe.

E-cigs are reusable although some come with disposable components. The best selling products are the automatic style where vapor is delivered on demand when the user applies draws on the mouthpiece.

A sensor in the mouthpiece of an automatic e-cig detects air flow when the user inhales and activates a heating element in the battery section. The nicotine solution in the mouthpiece is vaporized by the heat from the battery section which has a LED light at the tip. Originally, the LED lights were always red or orange to resemble a burning cigarette but the lights can now be any color the user chooses.

On manual models, the user must press a button to activate the heating element and produce a vapor. The same components of electronic circuits and rechargeable batteries are present in both delivery systems, manual and automatic.

A small cup inside the mouthpiece is filled with absorbable material saturated with a liquid solution containing nicotine and flavoring. The mouthpiece is often referred to as the “cartridge” with a tip that may be round or shaped like a plastic cigar tip. Liquid in the cartridge is vaporized by the heating element for the user to inhale.

Electronic cigarettes are nothing more than a delivery system for nicotine. A wide variety of flavors of e-liquid are available from suppliers and users can choose from one of several levels of nicotine concentration. The dosage of nicotine resembles various strengths of tobacco products such as regular, light or extra-light. If you have wondered “what are electronic cigarettes” the answer is they are an excellent alternative to tobacco that provides nicotine without affecting your health or the safety of those around you.
