Did FDA Fumble Study On E-Cigarettes?

Sunday, October 30th, 2011

The e-cig controversy went viral around July of 2009 once the Food and Drug Administration released an investigation on smokefree cigarettes and their corresponding nicotine containing solution e juice identifying them as hazardous because they contained chemical substances regarded as poisonous to humans. The e cig enthusiasts fired back by appointing a prominent analysis firm to examine the FDA report and the techniques applied to obtain their conclusions. This firm found the conclusions obtained by the FDA study seemed to be invalid because the diagnostic techniques they employed had been far from those needed to produce these kinds of conclusive determinations.

So now, more than a year after, what have we discovered regarding the safety of smoke-free cigarettes? Well, quite simply, nothing has changed. Both sides of the controversy continue to claim their assertions are accurate. But in the end, the electric cigarette user remains in the dark concerning the safety and health of the electric cigarette. Let’s take a closer look at what specifically we do know.

In the interest of brevity, I won’t go into specifics about how the smokeless cigarette operates or how it’s used. It’s in essence a nicotine delivery product not unlike the doctor prescribed Nicotrol inhaler. It operates by warming and vaporizing a mix of glycerin and nicotine when the user takes a puff from the device. The Food and Drug Administration’s key point of contention (since confirmed wrong via the 2nd scientific study) is the nicotine containing liquid they examined included toxins dangerous to humans. The disagreement regarding this aspect isn’t the issue at hand. The most critical factor to notice would be the fact that the FDA very likely, if intentional or not, made a very important discovery.

In the USA, most anything we eat or drink must adhere to procedures controlled by a variety of government agencies which ensure our health and safety. We often see items which were recalled because of the smallest incompliance with proper requirements. So now why don’t we think about e-juice (the nicotine product found in smokeless cigarettes) for a moment. At this moment, you don’t see any guidelines or polices in place regulating its production, who may make it, how it is stored or even its shelf life. Essentially, you or I could go online, buy e-juice products and begin mixing it inside our kitchens with absolutely no legal requirements whatsoever. Of course for individual use this can seem acceptable. Still, I do not know of any similar product intended for human inhalation that you prepare for yourself let alone for mass consumption by providing it for sale on the web. However this is exactly what lots of e liquid vendors are actually doing.

Please do not misunderstand me. I am absolutely not saying that e-juice is unsafe. I am just saying there’s a genuine threat that because of poor regulation, a tainted e-liquid could theoretically land in the hands of an electric cigarette user. So now you will most likely consider the e liquid that is manufactured by the e-cig companies themselves? Here again, we fundamentally have the same situation. Produced for the most part in China, there is no regulation of any kind concerning how this e-juice is manufactured. In the long run, it appears consumers searching for e juice need to consider the old adage caveat emptor or “Let the buyer beware”.

Three Options To Stop Smoking With Hypnosis

Monday, September 19th, 2011

Using hypnosis to stop smoking is one of the most common uses of hypnosis and hypnotherapy. And more than simply a common use, it is also one of the most effective uses of hypnosis. In most cases, a single hypnosis session is all that is required to kick the smoking habit, though some people do enjoy additional and ongoing support if they have a particularly bad habit of many packs a day.

Your smoking habit is not merely a physical addition, it’s a mental one. The act of quitting can be difficult, but hypnosis can help you stop smoking by addressing your habit, not just your physical addiction, and by reprogramming your mind to make the process easier. But where to start? There are three possible ways to stop smoking with hypnosis:

1.) Find a hypnotist in your area to work with one-on-one.

This is a great method, and many people benefit from the hands-on relationship. Some people enjoy going to a therapist, and for people that prefer in-person visits and feel comfortable addressing their problems personally in front of their hypnotist, this can be a very effective method. The drawback, because it is a one-on-one visit, is that it can quickly get very expensive, especially if you need more than one session.

2.) Sign up for a local group session.

Visiting hypnotists often rent out large banquet facilities and advertise in the local paper. That’s what a group session is. You pay a fee, along with dozens to hundreds of other people, and you all congregate at the same time and place to receive treatment as a group from the hypnotist. It’s successful for some people, but if you are at all shy, reserved or uncomfortable letting yourself relax in front of an entire crowd of people, this might not be the method for you. Though usually affordable, it’s not terribly personal, and really does take a highly suggestible personality.

3.) Purchase an at-home hypnotherapy program.

Perhaps the easiest, most affordable and most successful method for most smokers is to use an at-home method. The big benefit is the fact that it’s private, unlike the other two methods. You use the program in your time, in the privacy of your own home, and you don’t have to force yourself to relax in front of other people you don’t know. There’s no awkward, uncomfortable feeling, and you can listen to the program as many times as you like, without paying anything extra – that’s simply not an option with the other methods.

If you are truly committed to kicking your smoking habit, hypnosis can help! Even if you’ve failed with other methods, because it works at a fundamental level, hypnosis can be the answer you’re looking for. The key is in finding the method that is best for you, your personality, and your wallet.

Buy Green Tea Extract To Quit Smoking

Saturday, September 10th, 2011

It hit me one afternoon, when I was trying to drive back a sore throat, and I held my cigarette in my left hand, and searched for my lighter with my right I know I should not be smoking. I have had this sore throat for nearly a week, and I can not stop smoking.

I really did not plan on quitting cutting back, yes-stopping, no way.

Smoking makes you appear old, smoking causes cancer, smoking smells, smoking makes your teeth brown, and a million other stop smoking ads raced through my head

I pondered all of them

Ok, now what. Well, I began to think. With a sore throat bugging me at that instant, I chose to attack this problem first. Vitamins, mouth wash, medicine; I found these were all fairly good ideas. But even though I was helping the issue, my throat still hurt, and I was beginning to cough.

Maybe the coughing was a blessing in disguise because I made a cup of green tea to help stop my soar throat as a kind of last resort option. The warm steam helped me breathe, and the hot water cleared my throat. If nothing else, this whole ordeal got me thinking.

I looked further into the matter, as I began drinking more tea.

I figured that drinking tea, Rooibos Tea and Jasmine Green Tea in particular, will help relax my nerves, has large amounts of anti-oxidants to fight against the increased level of free radicals in my body caused from smoking (that cause aging skin and of course, cancer), clean my body of toxins, help me to breathe better, and help me get rid of a soar throat. I looked at this list, and then started pondering those stop smoking ads

Is it possible that a cup of tea could help me stop smoking? From personal experience, I have discovered that green tea helps. No, I do not think drinking tea will protect me from all ailments, or that I will never be sick again, or that I can avoid any other health curse that may await me. With these new facts I had to accept, I can only do my best to minimize the damage. And as I end this article with no promises, I will restate a simple written statement that proves itself time and time again, drinking tea is a good idea.

May you enjoy this article on my thoughts on how I began consuming green tea. Can You Quit Smoking Through Nicotine Replacement Therapy?

Sunday, June 5th, 2011

Quitting cold turkey, or quitting abruptly, is one of the many ways one can quit the nasty habit of smoking. While this may be beneficial for your physical health, it’s often hard to achieve, so many people opt for nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), which weans them off of the drug gradually.

Withdrawal can be a pain for anyone quitting smoking – not only is it a pain physically, but especially mentally, and most smokers have to wait weeks before the withdrawal blues go away. When a person opts for NRT, he or she would be given cigarette alternatives like nicotine patches, sprays, gums, lozenges, or even inhalers – all with a small amount of nicotine – as a means to slowly wean the person from cigarette smoking.

While the smoker is still ingesting nicotine through the NRT, they are not ingesting the other harmful chemicals found in cigarettes, so it is a healthier option than the cigarettes themselves.

NRT, once again, replaces nicotine with a smaller amount of nicotine, but is nonetheless useful in helping one fight smoking’s psychological addiction. Smoking gives most people mental pleasure, and since cold turkey takes away this pleasure, it makes it more difficult for someone to deal with quitting, and in fact increases their chances of going back to cigarettes.

While withdrawal symptoms are not completely gone, they are reduced by up to 90% because the smoker is still getting a smaller dose of nicotine to stave off cravings. When asked why smoking cessation didn’t work for them, many said the #1 cause was the onset of withdrawal symptoms, so NRT helps alleviate that chance for failure.

Nicotine Replacement Therapy does not help you with the mental phase of addiction. It only serves to lessen the physical cravings. You, as the smoker, may need to utilize other tools in battling the mental phase of cigarette addiction.

Replacement therapy is also a bit riskier than quitting smoking on your own, so before you give any form of NRT a try, check with your doctor to see if it would be a good idea on you or not.

If you decide to use NRT, then it should be started right when you first quit smoking. NRT and cigarette smoking don’t mix, so don’t do both at the same time. With both NRT and cigarettes supplying nicotine to your system, your smoking habit and health risks could increase drastically.

The last warning would be to beware of side effects when undergoing replacement therapy. If so, consult your doctor and try switching to a different form of NRT until you find one that suits your preferences.
