It is important that smokers genuinely ‘resolve to stop smoking’ when they ‘decide’ to stop. Resolving to stop smoking properly makes a significant difference in your chances of success. By making a ‘proper’ decision, you increase your chances of success in overcoming the evil weed several fold.


So what do I mean by ‘making a proper decision’? Well, most smokers when they decide to stop smoking don’t really resolve to stop smoking; they merely decide to hope to be able to stop smoking. There are many reasons for this but the most significant one I think is the emotional attachment to smoking.


Smokers think that they enjoy smoking despite the fact that to smoke, one must inhale hot toxic gas and particulates in order to enjoy it. Because smokers are so attached to smoking as an enjoyable pass time, it is difficult to resolve to stop smoking without seeing stopping smoking as a test of will or abstinence, resulting in anxiety about stopping.


This anxiety manifests itself in the smokers mind by making them nervous at the thought of spending the rest of their lives without their beloved cigarettes. After all, the average smoker hasn’t enjoyed a cup of coffee, meal or alcoholic drink in the last few years without a trusty cigarette within arms reach.


If you decide to stop smoking you must resolve to stop smoking and not merely decide to ‘give it another go’. And it probably will be another go – research suggests that most smokers take 7 attempts over several years to kick the habit!


So how can you go about resolving to stop smoking? Well, firstly you must accept the rest of your life must be without cigarettes. This is an horrific proposition for most smokers because they enjoy smoking so much. But consider these facts;

Fact #3: 25% of the population have tried smoking and just couldn’t get into it – they don’t smoke and they seem to manage just fine too.


Fact #4: 25% of the population used to smoke at one time or another for varying periods of time but they have now stopped. They don’t smoke and seem to get on with life fine too.


Finally, there is the 25% of people who currently smoke and who have not managed to resolve to stop smoking. Researching how to stop smoking is a good start and the first step on a journey to a smoke free life so by reading this article you are already headed in the right direction!

There are many benefits to stopping smoking. Most of the benefits are reductions in the risk of developing some disease or other. These benefits are the reason why you should stop smoking. They wont in themselves help you stop smoking but they will provide you with motivation to go on and learn how to stop smoking successfully.


Stop smoking benefit #1: When you smoke, the cocktail of hot gases and chemicals found in cigarette smoke damages your body. There are 4,000 of them in all! As a result, if you fall ill, you take longer to recover and/or heal. Stopping smoking will significantly improve your ability to fight disease.


Stop smoking benefit #2: Smoking causes damage to your mouth and gums. Smokers are more likely to suffer from ‘acute necrotising and ulcerative gingivitis’ (diseased gums) which increases the risk of tooth loss and gives you bad breath amongst other things. Urgh!

The Pros And Cons Of Using A Stop Smoking Medication

You’ve decided to lose your cigarette habit, and know that the prospect of nicotine withdrawal is not a pleasant one. The good news is that stop smoking medication is available to ease your transition back to the world on non-smokers. If, however, you think you’d like to incorporate a stop smoking medication into your plan to quit, there are a few things you should consider.


There are two varieties of stop smoking medication; those which contain small amounts of nicotine and those which simply fool the brain into thinking it is getting nicotine by blocking its nicotine receptors.


Nicotine-Based Stop Smoking Medication

A stop smoking medication with nicotine, likes nicotine gum, lozenge, spray, or
patch, offer nicotine, but with a lower concentration and a rate of absorption than the nicotine in cigarettes. And nicotine-based stops smoking medication is, of course from a much safer source than toxin-loaded cigarettes. A nicotine-based medication contains nicotine in a variety of strengths, so that you can move to a lower dosage as you gradually wean yourself away from smoking.


The point of using a nicotine-based stop smoking medication is to quit cigarettes one and for all. So if you intend to use a nicotine-based stop smoking medication, start it on the day you stop smoking; if the nicotine you are getting from the stop smoking medication is insufficient to get you through your cravings, consult your doctor to see if an alternative stop smoking medication would be more appropriate for you.


Chantix And Zyban

There are only two FDA-approved prescription stop smoking medications; Chantix and Zyban. Chantix was FDA-approved in May of 2006 after being fast-tracked by the FDA, meaning that the period of FDA testing done on it was significantly shortened. Chantix works by attaching to the nicotine receptors in the brain and stimulating them to tell the brain to release dopamine, the ”pleasure” neurotransmitter.


By blocking those receptors, Chantix reduces your nicotine cravings at the same time it is giving you the dopamine release which smoking provides. Chantix, unlike a nicotine-based stop smoking medication, should be started a week before you stop smoking.


The second FDA-approves stop smoking medication, Zyban, was originally marketed as the anti-depressant buproprion, or Wellbutrin. Some smokers being treated for depression with Wellbutrin reported that they lost their desire for cigarettes, so Wellbutrin’s maker Glaxo Kline tested it as a stop smoking medication, found that it did have some effectiveness, and had it FDA-approved for that purpose.


Most experts on addiction agree that using a stop smoking medication, while it may get you through the withdrawal period and remove your physical addiction to nicotine, will do nothing to eliminate the emotional attachment you had to smoking. Undergoing behavioral modification therapy, which enables you to get at the psychological causes underlying your cigarette use, is always a good idea.
